Focus Groups

Effective communication grows out of understanding audiences’ perceptions, interests, and needs. That work begins with listening. We use focus groups and one-on-one interviews so we can hear directly from key audiences. Examples of this work include:

Shaping initiatives and projects.

We have conducted focus groups for DC Public Schools, Delaware Schools, and Prince George’s County Public Schools to gather input from teachers, principals, and parents. The focus group goals included gauging reactions to a new initiative for teachers, getting feedback on a website we were developing, and listening to concerns about districts’ communications with teachers.

Testing messages and logos.

We have used focus groups and one-on-one interviews to test logos and messages for clients including Unity Health Care, Engaging Schools, and Every Hour Counts.

Better engaging audiences.

We conducted focus groups for the Union of Concerned Scientists. The organization wanted to hear from members about how best to mobilize them and engage them in the organization’s efforts to create a healthier planet and a safer world. They have since implemented plans we recommended as a result of the focus groups.
