Strategic Planning

Our strategic planning addresses both big-picture objectives and the details that are necessary for sound implementation. We begin with the questions that drive all communications: What audiences do you want to reach? And what do you want them to do? Our services include:
  • Conducting long-term strategic communications planning, which results in a multiyear plan with specific goals, actions, timelines, and measures of success.
  • Helping coalitions and individual organizations develop strategies and work plans that solve discrete problems or address specific goals.
  • Developing plans for digital and social media.
  • Conducting strategic planning workshops.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

The Foundation wanted to find new ways to help community colleges share their stories about implementing guided pathways. So we used documentary film to tell compelling stories in the voices of students, faculty, and staff. The project — Voices of Pathways — included five documentary films, each about 10 minutes long, filmed at five colleges implementing pathways; a discussion guide; and related materials.

Pathways Collaborative

The collaborative is a coalition of 14 national organizations that are helping community colleges implement guided pathways. We helped the original 10 organizations develop a model for providing technical assistance to the growing number of colleges that want to restructure the student experience using pathways. Our work included planning and facilitating meetings at which the partner organizations developed the model, capturing decisions made and building on them to advance the conversation, and writing a detailed report that describes the model. We then developed an online pathways resource center, which provides materials and videos to help colleges implement pathways.

Prime Time Palm Beach County

Prime Time is a nonprofit that serves out-of-school-time programs and practitioners. We provided communications support to Prime Time and the School District of Palm Beach County as part of a Wallace Foundation initiative to promote social and emotional learning (SEL). We developed a strategic plan that focused on elevating the partnership between the district and Prime Time, ensuring that communications are consistent, and intensifying the focus on SEL in both in-school and after-school programming.

Education Resource Strategies

We developed a social media strategy for this nonprofit that transforms how urban school systems organize resources (people, time, technology, and money). We started with an analysis of activity in each of the organization’s social media channels. We then aligned ERS’ strategic and communications goals with social media opportunities, recommended high-priority social media channels and approaches, set specific goals for growth, identified a select list of influencers to target for deeper engagement, and provided recommendations for content. We also developed an editorial calendar that highlights key topics at different points in the school year, created a warehouse of tweets and posts related to those topics, and identified relevant videos and visuals.
